Get Recognized: Making the Leaderboard

Overview

The Bugcrowd Leaderboard is an analytics and ranking interface that allows researchers to track their performance over time across paid programs. It displays rankings based on point totals and valid submission counts, and supports filtering by priority level, country, and time range.

This guide covers how to use the leaderboard effectively to track personal performance, benchmark against others, and extract historical insights.

Leaderboard Structure

Each leaderboard entry contains:

  • Rank: Numerical placement based on total points within the selected filters
  • Hacker: Display name and avatar (linked to profile)
Note: If your account is private, you’ll be listed as “Private user” on the leaderboard. You won’t see your rank, know which entry is yours, or have your profile linked, even if you appear on the leaderboard.
  • Country: ISO country flag
  • Points: Total points earned from valid submissions (only for paid engagements)
  • Valid Submissions: Total number of valid reports submitted (includes duplicate submissions)

Leaderboard rankings are cached and display a UTC-based timestamp (e.g., “Cached until 07 Aug 2025 19:34:56 UTC”).

How Rank is calculated

Leaderboard rankings are determined using a multi-tiered sorting logic designed to reward impact and efficiency:

Total Points

  • Your score is the total sum of points from valid submissions to paid programs.
  • Submissions are weighted by severity (e.g., 40 points for P1s vs. 5 points for P4s).
  • Researchers with the highest total points are ranked higher on the leaderboard.

Valid Submissions Count

  • If two researchers have the same number of points, the one with fewer valid submissions ranks higher.
  • This promotes submission quality over quantity — fewer submissions to reach the same score shows higher efficiency.

Username (Alphabetical)

  • If both points and valid submission count are equal, usernames are compared alphabetically as a final tiebreaker.

Efficiency Example

Researcher Points Valid Submissions Rank
Hacker 1 1000 5 ↑ 1
Hacker 2 1000 7 ↓ 2

Even though both researchers have 1000 points, Hacker 1 ranks higher due to fewer valid submissions.

Filtering Options

The leaderboard provides dynamic filters to refine the data set:

A. Time Range Filters

Located at the top-left:

  • All Time
  • This Month
  • Current Month (e.g., “August” – static snapshot of that month’s standings)

Note: “This Month” is real-time and updates throughout the current month. “Month Name” is a static view.

B. Priority Filter

Located top-right (dropdown menu):

  • P1, P2: Displays only submissions categorized as P1 or P2
  • P1–P4: Includes P1 through P4 submissions

C. Country Filter

Located top-right (dropdown menu):

  • Filters rankings to only include researchers from a selected country (based on user profile country code)
  • Defaults to “All Countries”

Accessing Historical Leaderboards

The leaderboard supports manual URL construction to view historical data.

Format:

Segment Example Description
{priority} p1top2 or p1top4 Priority filter
{country} US, IN, AU, etc. ISO country code
{month} 2025-Jul, 2024-Dec, etc. Target month/year

Example:

Notes:

  • This only works for completed months.
  • Leaderboards are static snapshots — no real-time updates for historical views.

Sharing Leaderboard Status

Quick-share options are available at the bottom of the leaderboard:

  • Facebook Share
  • Twitter/X Share

These auto-generate a post with your current rank and a link to the leaderboard.

Tips for Improving Rank

  • Focus on valid P1–P2 submissions for high-impact points.
  • Submit consistently to maintain monthly visibility.
  • Use country filters to build regional visibility. You can select your country in your profile settings.
  • Review historical trends to identify high-activity months or competitive shifts.
